Вначале этого года, а если быть точнее, то 24-26 февраля 2017 года, прошёл XIV Чемпионат мира по ловле на мормышку со льда в Риге на озере Мазайс Балтэзерс. По итогам соревнований среди 14 стран Россия завоевала 3 место с общим весом 14 765 г, на втором месте — Латвия (14 940 г), на первом — Украина (15 960 г). Команда-чемпион обошла нас на килограмм. Можно долго обсуждать просчёты в стратегии и тактике. Но, как рассказал один из очевидцев и спонсоров чемпионата, настоящей тактической находкой сборной Украины было то, что они на скорости приближались к лунке, падали заранее на колени, подъезжая, как на санках, к исходной точке, тут же опускали в неё мормышку. 
При обычном подходе к лунке с присаживанием на этом теряется 3-5 секунд. Из таких секунд складывается дополнительное время на поимку рыбы. В начале марта я пообщался с этим спонсором на подмосковном водоёме, в процессе соревнований на последнем отборочном этапе кубка Москвы по мормышке, и присмотрелся к участникам: как они подходят к лунке, как ловят, какое у них снаряжение. И в первую очередь меня интересовали наколенники.
Стоит согласиться, что рыболовные костюмы с советских времён пустых прилавков прошли некую эволюцию — от ватных штанов до современных, с мембранными материалами. Но не все держат тепло одинаково хорошо. В тех местах, где происходят сгибы (на коленях и в пятой точке), утеплитель сжимается и начинает пропускать холод. Особенно это остро чувствуется при длительной езде на снегоходах и статической ловле (сидя на ящике или на корточках, склонившись над лункой). В такие моменты выручают наколенники, утеплённые крышки ящиков. Но не всегда удобно сидеть на ящике. Особенно это важно при спортивной ловле на мормышку, когда важна каждая непропущенная поклёвка, несмотря на задувание ветра. Тут лучшая защита — это корпус рыболова и плотный контакт со льдом, чтобы ветер не играл леской и сторожком. Вот тогда и выручают наколенники и пенка на пятой точке. Но современная рыболовно-конструкторская мысль не стоит на месте и всё время движется вперёд. Если защитить не только колено, но и голень полностью, преимуществ будет гораздо больше.
